exercising puppies

Many new puppy owners have lots of questions regarding how they should exercise their dogs and how long. Puppies have substantially different needs than adult dogs, and although it's easy to think you're hyperactive puppy can withstand a 6 mile run, think again!

Puppies have growth plates on their bones that don't close until they're anywhere from 18-24 months of age. While these plates are open, your pup is susceptible to injuries so it's important to exercise your puppy in safe but worthwhile ways.

How long should you exercise your puppy? Here's the rule of thumb:

(Puppy's age in months) times (5) 2x a day

For example, if your puppy is 3 months old, you can exercise her 15 minutes a day twice a day. If your puppy is 6 months old, you can exercise her for 30 minutes twice a day. This is only a rule of thumb. Some breeds and individual dogs will require more or less exercise. However, this rule is a good principle to start with and decently accurate.

How should you exercise your puppy? Every breed and dog is different, but you can go for walks, play in the backyard, and jog with older and/or larger puppy puppies. If you really want to make sure you aren't giving your pup too much exercise, you can let him lead the walk. This way, things are more leisure and he go at his own pace.

Are you wondering if your puppy gets too little exercise? Some signs include overly destructive behaviors (all puppies chew, remember that), running boisterously around the house, excessive whimpering and begging, anxiety such as separation anxiety, etc.

If you're curious whether or not you're exercising your pup too much, signs include notable thirst, joint pain, excessive panting, the inability to keep up with you or run, etc.

What are you waiting for? Get off the computer and tire out that crazy puppy!
